Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Proper fluid balance is essential for the maintenance of a variety of biological functions and failure to do so can affect an individual's health. Moreover, water is the single largest component of the body representing about 40 - 70 percent of body weight for adult men and women. To understand fluid balance, however, one must first recognize the various fluid compartments of the body. This chapter focuses on the fluid compartments, how they change with growth and development, examines possible differences between genders, and the changes associated with growth and aging.
