Technical Abstract: The western corn rootworm is among the most important insect pests in the United States, yet no lines of corn have been previously identified which have antibiosis resistance to corn rootworm larvae. We are conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory screening of exotic maize and maize relatives in an effort to identify germplasm resistant (antibiosis/nonpreference) to these major pests. Laboratory bioassays involving host-plant recognition and greenhouse trials have been conducted with some of the "best" and "worst" accessions from the 1994 field trials. Data from the behavioral bioassays and greenhouse trials indicate that results correlate very well with field data. In 1995, we are evaluating more than 750 accessions of maize and maize relatives for resistance to corn rootworms in artificially-infested field trials. Results from the field trials as well as the bioassay and greenhouse data will be discussed. .
