Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The stripper header, manufactured by Shelbourne Reynolds Engineering LTD of Shepards Grove, England, strips grain from standing plants with comb like fingers attached to a high speed rotating cylinder. It leaves most of the straw standing and threshes about 50% of the grain before it enters the combine proper. Header grain loss and straw distribution behind a combine equipped with a stripper-header was evaluated. Grain loss at the header with the stripper header unit decreased as combine speed increased. Header grain loss was less than conventional cutter bar loss when combine speeds were greater than 4.8 to 6.4 km hr-1. Only about half as much straw and chaff (mostly chaff) go through the combine as compared to a conventional system. Even though residue distribution was better than for a conventional system, chaff was concentrated near the center of the combine swath.
