Technical Abstract: Many stressors found in pig production facilities today can have an effect on the immune system of the animal. Where Stockmanship is important in the equations is in reducing the negative impact of stress on the pig. How is this accomplished? The research presented in this paper indicates that we have a good start in understanding the mechanisms of the stress response, the intermediate players, and the effect of stress on different immune cells. What we are still lacking is a clear understanding of alternative management practices that may help alleviate some of the consequences of these production stressors. Clearly appropriate housing and handling of the animal is included in this concept of stress reduction. Other areas to pursue should include looking at environmental enrichment in today's confinement operations.
