Technical Abstract: Soil erosion is a severe problem on the Loess Plateau of China. Runoff from this region discharges in to the Yellow River, the second longest river in China with a name derived from its sediment-laden nature. The Chinese government has established many research stations in the loess region to quantify soil erosion and develop conservation measures. The Northwestern Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (NWISWC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences leads the effort in controlling sediment production from the Loess Plateau. Scientists from the NWISWC developed many agricultural production systems and conservation practices that not only reduced sediment yield, but more importantly, provided great economic benefits to farmers. In this presentation, different land forms, erosion features and conservation practices in different climatic zones within the Loess Plateau will be highlighted.
