Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In the last few years, the number and variety of DNA probes we hold as the public bank and distribution center has grown greatly. We now have over 6,400 clones of which we distribute more than 4,700. This collection includes the large sets of sequenced cDNAs generated by Chris Baysdorfer, California State University-Hayward (designated csu), and by Tim Helentjaris while he was at the University of Arizona (designated uaz or 5C, 6C, etc.). These clones represent the largest collection of candidate genes publicly available for maize. Over the last four years, the UMC Maize Probe Bank has filled more than 540 requests for more than 16,000 clones to 30 countries. Among those distributed, were 71 sets of the UMC Core Marker probes. The UMC Core Marker set has become the standard set for mapping genes, phenotypes and QTLs in maize. Details on the available clones and distributions by country will be presented. In addition to the probe banking and distribution functions, the UMC RFLP Laboratory will map any clones of defined function contributed by individual scientists. Each gene, when mapped, adds to the accumulated knowledge for correlating sequence with function. A map indicating the positions of the contributed genes will be presented.
