Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Efficacies and profitability of weed control might increase if the timing of control was based more on weed biology than on rule-of-thumb calendar dates. To test this hypothesis, mechanical and chemical control measures were implemented when WeedCast software predicted varying levels of weed emergence and early seedling growth in a series of field experiments with row crops in Minnesota. Calendar windows for control operations were less reliable than forecasted biological windows. Optimum times for implementation of control technologies were species- and technology-specific. For example, control of green foxtail (Setaria viridis [L.] Beauv.) in row crops was best if implemented when foxtail emergence was predicted at 30% for rotary hoeing and 60% for interrow cultivation.
