Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Efforts to generate hybrids between 2x(2EBN) Solanum tuberosum haploids and 2x(1EBN) Mexican diploid species via embryo rescue and mentor pollen resulted in a true hybrid in 1997. This unique plant is a hypoploid (22 chromosomes) and resulted from the cross between the haploid US-W 13,089 (Sebago) and S. pinnatisectum (PI 275233). Its hybridity has been confirmed through morphology, chromosome number and RAPD analysis. Its resistance to late blight was tested in an unsprayed replicated experiment at the UW Agricultural Research Station at Hancock, WI during the 1997 summer where the results indicate a high level of field resistance to the disease. The hybrid is completely male sterile but exhibited a low degree of female fertility. From meiotic analysis it is evident that normal pairing occurs between the two genomes, although the presence of univalents was observed. These results support the view that transfer of valuable characters from S. pinnatisectum to S. tuberosum cultivars is feasible; however, aneuploidy and presence of univalents may inhibit the efforts.
