Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Colorado potato beetle (CPB) experiments were initiated during 1995 when 3,625 pollinations were conducted between Solanum tuberosum haploids and 2x(2EBN) species S. buksovii, S. chacoense, S. raphanifolium, S. sparsipilum, and S. tarijense. During the summer of 1997, 21 families, one backcross, nine PIs, 11 haploids, six controls and one cultivar were tested for CPB resistance in the field using a 7x7 lattice where the cultivar 'Norland' was used as a spreader. Individual plants were scored weekly for the number of egg masses, larvae, adults and percent defoliation. A wide range of reactions was observed within and between families especially from individuals with S. tarijense parentage. Only those hybrids with S. chacoense parents showed high resistance to the insect.
