Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: White food-grade corn is used for dry corn meal and grits products. Seed producers, corn millers, and farmers need agronomic performance data to select white food-grade corn hybrids adapted for growing in specific regions of the United States. The national performance tests of white food-grade hybrids includes germplasm classified into late and early maturity groups. Smaller seed companies have benefitted by having their products tested in a much wider area than could be accomplished by the company itself. Late maturity, white food-grade corn performance and grain quality testing has been conducted from 1977 to the present. During 22 years (including 1998) of testing late maturity germplasm, 679 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by two universities and 52 private companies. For 1998, 15 of 33 entries are new to the test. Early maturity, white food-grade performance and grain quality (quality data reported beginning in 1988) testing has been done since 1984. During 15 years of testing, 357 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by three universities and 41 private companies. For 1998, 12 of 35 entries are new to the test. Data on European corn borer tolerance are obtained for all tests. Grain quality data that are common across tests include test weight, kernel weight, kernel density, and pericarp removal. Testing is supported by the North American Millers' Association (NAMA), The Quaker Oats Company, and participating seed companies.
