Technical Abstract: New pesticides are more potent and require more precise application. Research is continuing in universities, government, and industry to develop new methods and equipment to achieve maximum efficiency in the use of pesticides while minimizing the potential risk to the applicator and the environment. This paper summarizes major developments in spray application technology research and recent developments to reduce spray drift and to improve application efficiency. These developments include low drift nozzles that produce larger drops, air-induction, electrostatic, and air-atomizing nozzles. Other drift reduction technology discussed includes air-assisted sprayers, boom shields, and tunnel sprayers. Technology to support precision farming includes variable rate sprayers, GPS and GIS techniques, closed chemical transfer systems, and flow control systems. New orchard spray technology include tower sprayers and canopy sensing techniques. Biological pest control agents often require special delivery systems to prevent damage to the living organisms being distributed on the plant canopy.
