The mission of the ARS Research Laboratory in Prosser, WA, is to improve the irrigated vegetable and forage production systems in the Pacific Northwest by optimizing the production inputs and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. This is accomplished by: (i) developing new germplasm lines of potatoes, forages, and edible legumes with enhanced resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses; greater nutritional and phytonutrient values, and improved processing qualities; (ii) determining the cause and control of various diseases of the above crops, and developing integrated crop management techniques to minimize the negative impacts of diseases on crop production and product quality, thus increasing net returns; (iii) developing technologies for sustainable agricultural production, enhancing soil quality, and minimizing negative environmental impacts by optimizing input resource management for irrigated rotation cropping systems, including: alternate crops, nutrients, irrigation, pest management, tillage, crop residue management, and cover crops. The products of the above research contribute to the following mission of the USDA-ARS: (i) ensure high-quality safe food, and other agricultural products; (ii) sustain a competitive agricultural economy; (iii) enhance the natural resource base and the environment.
