Slide 3.   In the strawberry growing area around Tulangi, farmer George Weda and Environmental Science Student Anna Mitchell look at a strawberry field that requires frequent irrigation and deep ripping to provide adequate water to crop roots, and to prevent runoff and erosion when intermittent rain occurs.  PAM, applied via sprinkler irrigation is being considered as a means of improving infiltration and reducing the number of irrigations and deep ripping operations required to manage the crop.  PAM is a soil stabilizer, and therefore helps prevent surface sealing.  Surface seals promote runoff.  Eliminating a single irrigation or deep ripping operation could be enough to pay for the PAM directly, as well as provide lasting benefits by reducing traffic and soil structural damage.
