Research Project: Combating Emerging Disease Threats for Cotton

Location: Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 6066-21000-053-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2019
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
ARS and Mississippi State University will cooperate to accelerate and enhance the ongoing efforts to identify cotton plants with a viral disease, develop a fast and efficient diagnostic test for the virus and screen cotton lines for genetic resistance to this disease threat.

Approach:
ARS and Mississippi State University will cooperatively: 1. collect samples from an observation plot and farmers’ fields and analyze for them for the presence of Cotton Leaf Roll Dwarf Virus (CLRDV); 2. improve the current diagnostic test for CLRDV to make it more efficient, reliable and less costly to allow large scale testing in the field; and 3. provide cotton cultivars and germplasm for a field screening test to identify cotton with resistance to this new virus observed in the southeastern United States.
