Progress is being made on many fronts on factors which will improve postharvest quality. This review will examine: 1) cultural practices related to optimizing fruit quality, 2) handling procedures which benefit product quality, 3) storage methodologies (and their modifications), 4) cultivar differences, and 5) chemical treatments and upcoming technologies which may have impacts on storage. This information will be of value to scientists interested in postharvest research with Vaccinium and to growers and marketers who store fruit for subsequent marketing. Technical Abstract: The long-term goals of post-harvest research are to improve product availability, to maintain product quality, and to improve economics for producers. Progress is being made on many fronts on factors which will improve postharvest quality. This review will examine: 1) cultural practices related to optimizing fruit quality, such as fertilization and irrigation 2) handling procedures which benefit product quality, 3) storage methodologies (and their modifications), especially with respect to controlled atmospheres, 4) cultivar differences, and 5) chemical treatments and upcoming molecular technologies which may have impacts on storage. |
