Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Cyst nematodes are nematodes in which the swollen female dies after producing eggs. The body undergoes a tanning process to become highly resistant to harsh environmental conditions. This resistant female body is called a cyst. Cyst nematodes occur worldwide from tropical to temperate regions and are serious pests to many crops. One method used to control cyst nematodes is to develop resistant varieties. This chapter contains detailed information on nematode species and race identification and specific methodologies of evaluating different crops for nematode resistance to various cyst nematodes. The chapter will provide practical yet detailed information for individuals worldwide who are engaged in the development of crops resistant to cyst nematodes. Nematodes discussed in the cyst nematode chapter and that occur in the U.S. include sugarbeet cyst nematode, potato cyst nematode, oat cyst nematode, and soybean cyst nematode.
