Interpretive Summary: Many tropical countries would like to be able to grow fruit normally grown in temperate zones, such as apple, peach, cherry, and so on. This international workshop held in Spain covered genetic resources for temperate fruit grown in the tropics. The papers included discuss peach, loquat, and apple. Peach breeding programs aimed at developing peaches adapted to tropical areas in Brazil, Spain and Mexico are described. Molecular markers or DNA fingerprints are described as useful to characterize populations of loquat, peach and apple. Other methods of characterizing genetic resources and their potential to be used in low-chill environments are discussed.
