Efficacy of Two Novel Fungicides for Control of Strawberry Anthracnose. Phytopathology. 95:S2. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: We compared the efficacy of sampangine and CAY-1, two new fungicides from natural sources, with that of the commercial fungicide azoxystrobin to prevent strawberry anthracnose using a detached leaf assay. Detached leaves of strawberry cv. Chandler were treated with fungicides 24 h before or after inoculation with Colletotrichum fragariae isolate CF-75. Four days after inoculation conidial germination of the pathogen was evaluated by observing cleared sections of leaf tissue stained with 0.05% acid fuchsin. All three fungicides reduced leaf lesions when applied to the host prior to inoculation, but none were effective when applied after inoculation. Results of the detached leaf assays were corroborated by direct microscopic observations of the pathogen on the cleared leaf tissue. The physical mode of action for sampangine and CAY-1 is similar to that documented for azoxystrobin which is the inhibition of fungal spore germination. |
