Proceedings of Pittcon Meeting. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Biodiesel is an alternative diesel fuel derived from vegetable oils, animal fats, or used cooking oils. It is produced by reacting these materials with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst to give the corresponding mono-alkyl esters. 1H-NMR is a routine analytical method that has been used for numerous purposes in oleochemistry. With biodiesel being an oleochemical product, it is straightforward to apply 1H-NMR to biodiesel research. Applications include determination of the fatty acid profile, monitoring of biodiesel production and monitoring of biodiesel oxidation. These applications are also of general interest in oleochemistry. |
