The goals of this Workshop are to bring together those who have experience with different microarray, macroarray, and next-generation sequencing systems as applied to the detection and identification of plant viruses, with special emphasis on the application of these methods to identify new and emerging viruses. Dissemination of knowledge regarding improved means of detecting, identifying, and characterizing such new and emerging viruses is critical to preventing the introduction of new diseases into other areas through legitimate international trade. The Workshop will critically review current approaches to microarrays and next-generation sequencing in order to identify the most promising methods, the bioinformatic challenges, critical deficiencies, and areas in which collaborative efforts may move the field forward. Discussion of ways to make these technologies more cost-effective for routine use by plant protection services will be incorporated into the Workshop structure.
