Little Topashaw Creek - Effects of Large Woody Debris Structures on Bend Flow Field

Objectives: This project provided insight regarding the effects of LWDS on stream flow and sediment transport by simulating LWDS as a kind of vegetation in 2D numerical simulations of bed changes in a channel bend.

High flow conditions at Little Topashaw Creek

Methods: Characteristics of LWDS placed in the channel bend were used with measured velocities to build a model of a specific meander bend using the FVM-CCHE2D modeling program. The Finite Volume Method (FVM)based CCHE2D is a depth-averaged numerical model for flow, sediment transport, and changes in bed topography in open channels developed at the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering.
