UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH SERVICE WASHINGTON, D.C. 20050 and FLORIDA AND CALIFORNIA AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATIONS RELEASE OF MARKET CARROT HYBRID SAVORY The United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, with the California and Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations announce the release of SAVORY tested under pedigree (B8080xB2302)xB2566. SAVORY is a home garden and fresh-market carrot adapted for production in both organic and mineral soils where Imperator 58, HiColor 9, Gold Pak, and hybrids A Plus, Orlando Gold and Golden State are grown. In 1985, California-grown SAVORY received, from trained judges, the highest flavor ratings given in five years of tests that included popular high-quality hybrids, A Plus and Orlando Gold. Flavor ratings of SAVORY grown in Florida were equal to A Plus and Orlando Gold and superior to the widely-grown variety, HiColor 9. In addition to its excellent flavor and eating quality, nutritional value derived from pro-vitamin A in carotenes is of special interest. Average total carotene of 120 ppm in SAVORY is equal to Orlando Gold and 40% higher than widely-grown Imperator 58. Roots preferred by consumers for the unique, crisp texture of SAVORY, may be sensitive to cracking by mechanical harvest. This is a minor problem for home gardens, but commercial growers are urged to limit their experimental acreage and minimize mechanical damage. SAVORY was evaluated for appearance in trials at Zellwood, FL in 1985 and El Centro, CA in 1984 and 1985. Following are acceptability scores based on values of 1 = unacceptable, 2 = poor, 3 = fair, 4 = good, and 5 = excellent. 19841 1985 Entry CA FL CA SAVORY 3.0 3.4 3.3 A Plus 1.9 3.2 2.8 Orlando Gold 2.8 3.5 3.4 Golden State 2.4 3.0 3.6 Candy Pack 3.0 2.3 3.3 Olympiad 3.7 2.6 3.0 Imperator 58 2.2 2.0 2.2 HiColor 9 2.6 3.0 2.8 8 commercial hybrids2 (average) 2.5 2.4 2.6 range of commercial hybrids 2.1-3.0 1.6-3.2 2.1-3.0 1 There were 38 to 52 judges for each trial; one observation row per entry. 2 Commercial hybrid entries were Chancellor, Pak Mor, Fanci Pak, Dominator, Six Pak II, HiPak, Top Pak, and Dagger 78. |
These values demonstrate that SAVORY is acceptable as a commercial variety and should be competitive with most available varieties on the basis of appearance alone. SAVORY is being released because of its superior eating quality and high vitamin A potential. The inbred B8080 was released in 1983. B2302 and B2566 were released early in 1986 to permit seed increase this year. Pilot production of stock seed and hybrid SAVORY were accomplished by ARCO Seed Company in 1985 under standard agreements with the Agricultural Research Service. The Fl seed parent (B8080xB2302) and its inbred components, produced under these agreements, will supply interested companies with needed stock seed to initiate production. Those who wish to produce SAVORY should request production shares. Those interested in testing the female parent (B8080xB2302) in experimental combination with other pollen parents should request experimental samples for that purpose. Pilot production of SAVORY will be pro-rated by ARCO, at a reasonable wholesale price, to competing seed producers on orders received before April 1, 1986. If a demand develops, this provision ensures competing seed firms a means of supplying their customers while initiating their own production. Seed of the three inbred components, the Fl seed parent for production or experimental needs, and trial samples of SAVORY can be secured by addressing requests before March 1, 1986 to P. W. Simon, USDA, ARS, Department of Horticulture, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706. __________________________________________________ Date____________________ Director Florida Agricultural Experiment Station ____________________________________________________ Date____________________ Director, California Agricultural Experiment Station ____________________________________________________ Date____________________ Administrator, Agricultural Research Service |
