UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Agricultural Research Service Washington, D.C. 20250 THE CALIFORNIA AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION The University of California Davis, California 95616 and THE IDAHO AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION The University of Idaho Moscow, Idaho 83843 MEMORANDUM TO HYBRID CARROT SEED PRODUCERS ANNOUNCING THE RELEASE OF HYBRID CARROT CANDY PACK, PEDIGREE (B3640 x B3080) x B2158-1 The U.S. Department of Agriculture, cooperatively with the California and Idaho Experiment Stations, announce the release of CANDY PACK, a fresh-market hybrid carrot adapted for production in mineral soils of California and Arizona where strains of Imperator 58 are grown. The inbred components of CANDY PACK were selected at Brawley, California and the hybrid has been tested in carrot-pro- ducing areas similar to that where the parent lines were developed. CANDY PACK has produced total yields equal to Imperator 58, but more uniform in size and shape with higher pack-out, and with superior internal color and eating quality. It is recommended for commercial trial in areas where it is adapted. The inbred components of CANDY PACK, B3080M, B3640S & M and B2158-1, were re- leased to hybrid seed producers in September, 1976 to permit planting in time for steckling production and insure prompt increases of stock seed. Seedsmen wishing to produce seed of CANDY PACK, were supplied with limited quantities of the F1 female parent (B3640S x B3080M) and the pollinator B2158-1 in order to provide some pilot production in 1977 while inbred stocks are being in- creased. Seed of CANDY PACK produced under contract in 1977 by the Alf Christianson Seed Company, Mount Vernon, Washington 99273, Keystone Seed Co., Hollister, California 95023 and the Crookham Co., Caldwell, Idaho 83605 will be pro- rated at a reasonable wholesale price to seedsmen on orders received before October 1, 1977. Trial samples may be secured by written request addressed to: C. E. Peterson, USDA, ARS, Department of Horticulture, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706. /s/ J. B.
