Research Chemist
Biography and Research
Dr. Milagros (Mila) Hojilla-Evangelista has been a Research Chemist at NCAUR, USDA-ARS, Peoria, IL since 1997. She received her B.S. in Food Technology and M.S. in Food Science from the University of the Philippines at Los Baños and Ph.D. in Food Technology from Iowa State University. She conducted postdoctoral research on alternative corn fractionation technology at Iowa State University and on soybean-based foamed plywood adhesives at NCAUR. Dr. Hojilla-Evangelista is a member of a team of scientists that conducts research on the development of novel, marketable products utilizing current and new co-products from the industrial processing of agricultural crops, primarily the proteins in pennycress, camelina, soybean, cottonseed or corn. The goals of her research are to devise practical ways to extract and recover the proteins, determine their properties, and evaluate their suitability for various uses, such as films, fibers, thickeners, emulsifiers, or adhesives. These industrially useful, higher value products generated by this research will reduce dependence on non-renewable materials, provide an additional revenue stream to growers and processors, and benefit a large segment of our economy.
Dr. Hojilla-Evangelista was co-winner (Pennycress Researchers Team) of the 2022 ARS Technology Transfer Award. She was elected as Fellow by the American Oil Chemists' Society in 2019. She was awarded the 2019 and 2018 American Oil Chemists’ Society Archer Daniels Midland Award for Best Paper in Protein and Co-products, Engineering/Technology and the 2018 Iowa State University Food Science and Human Nutrition Alumni Impact Award.
