2016 SWQL Annual Report

The Soft Wheat Quality Lab held its 62nd annual Research Review in conjunction with the Soft Wheat Quality Council, March 1 and 2nd in Lexington, Kentucky at the Radisson Cincinnati Riverfront Hotel. The meeting was attended by 67 representatives of soft wheat breeding programs, milling companies, farms, government and the food industry.

Siemer Milling Company president, Rick Siemer, hosted a pre-meeting tour of the newly constructed, state-of-the-art Whitewater Mill in West Harrison, Indiana. Back in Cincinnati, attendees sampled a taste of local brewing with dinner at the Taft Ale House and a tour of Rhinegeist Brewery.

Byung-Kee Baik, director of the Soft Wheat Quality Lab, called the meeting to order and talked about research accomplishments and goals for the lab. Bryan Penning, the new research scientist who joined the SWQL in March was introduced and presented his work on Gene Discovery and Trait Development.

Speakers from around the country presented perspectives on soft wheat quality, milling and baking concerns, as well as wheat breeding, genetics and improvement.   Neal Carpenter from Virginia Tech presented a student poster on genetics of combined resistance to leaf rust, stripe rust and Hessian fly.

A panel discussion, led by Clay Sneller, Ohio State University wheat breeder, surveyed Quality Traits and Markers for Eastern Soft Wheat. Panel members, Carl Griffey (Virginia Polytech), Gang Guo (Ardent Mills), Pat Donahue (Mondeléz International), Dave Van Sanford (U. of Kentucky), Jana Murche (KWS Cereals), Rick Siemer (Siemer Milling Co.), discussed the advantages and limitations associated with breeding for quality.

Research presentations from the SWQL were:

Byung-Kee Baik - N-fertilizer rate on grain quality
Taehyun Ji - Volatile flavor compounds of wheat grain
Moon-Seok Kang - Changes in grain characteristics and falling number during maturity
Fengyun Ma - Influences of starch amylose content on steamed bread
Tom Donelson - Cake baking test for non-chlorinated flour
