Unit History


The NPURU began its work in Oxford, MS at the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR) in October of 1996.  The NCNPR is located on the campus of the University of Mississippi, between the chemistry and pharmacy buildings.  The research unit is physically located in the NCNPR, along with University of Mississippi and Research Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences scientists whose primary mission is discovery of natural products for pharmaceutical uses.  The NPURU is under the Mid-South Area Office of ARS, located in Stoneville, MS.

2008:

The new USDA-ARS-NPURU greenhouse is completed and fully functioning.

Stephen Duke, Ph.D. was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the University of the Basque Country (EHU) in Bilbao, Spain on Nov. 26, 2008.  The award was given to recognize him for his international contributions to plant and agricultural sciences and for his long standing interactions with EHU.  EHU is a major university in Spain with approximately 35,000 students.

2009:

MSA Senior Research Scientist:

Dr. Agnes Rimando was awarded the 2009 Mid South Area Senior Research Scientist of the Year.

Citation: "For research on stilbenes that has postively impacted the blueberry industry and has provided the basis for using these compounds to benefit human health."
