New ARS Food and Nutrition Research Briefs Issued

Dietary calcium supplements do not reduce the risk of hip fracture—and that's just one of the new nutrition and health findings noted in the most recent issue of the Agricultural Research Service's "Food and Nutrition Research Briefs" and its Spanish-language edition, Informe de investigaciones de alimentos y nutrición.

Among other findings, the current issue reports:
- Potato preparation method can cut the mineral content by as much as 75 percent.
- New methods of protecting fresh produce from foodborne pathogens are on the horizon.
- The effect of snacking on teenagers' dietary intakes of recommended nutrients is sized up.
