What do I have to do if I volunteer for a nutrition study?
Study responsibilities differ depending on the nature of each study. Short term studies usually range from 2-4 weeks while long term studies can last up to 16 weeks, or 4 months.
Most of the studies we conduct at FCHL are controlled feeding studies, where volunteers are required to eat all the food that is provided and only the food that is provided and nothing else. Volunteers are usually expected to come into the center at the BHNRC on weekdays for breakfast and dinner, while lunches and weekend foods will be packed out.
Most studies will have a few blood draws and occasional urine and/or fecal collections. Depending on the particular study, some studies will have a week or longer break between the different treatment periods while volunteers are under no food restrictions.
