Dr. Greenberg has a longstanding interest in ornithology, ecology, and agriculture and was an early proponent of sustainable means of growing coffee and other tree crops, as well as monitoring these crops for their impacts on birds. He popularized the term 'Bird-Friendly Coffee' and used the American public's passion for coffee to generate widespread awareness of sustainable agriculture and ecological services.

He has conducted research on birds throughout the Western hemisphere that has resulted in the publication of 60 papers and three books. Dr. Greenberg received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1981 and has been affiliated with the Smithsonian and National Zoo ever since.
