Outreach - Saul Agricultural High School |
On March 9, 2005, at the W.B. Saul Agricultural High School in Philadelphia, the North Atlantic Area held the Annual Student Career Experience Scholarship Program. The top thirty in the senior class attended the presentation and viewed the Careers in ARS video. Students were very enthusiastic, interested and asked many questions. John Crew, the thenDeputy Area Director gave opening remarks and an overview of the Area and the kinds of research being conducted. Winnie Owens, Student Programs Coordinator at that time, gave background information on the scholarship program, application procedures and the interview process. The students had an added bonus when Justin Miller SCEP Student and former Saul alumni gave a presentation from the students' perspective of the program. He explained what type of work and experiments he participated in the last two summers working at the Eastern Regional Research Center. He also expressed to the student to include everything you do, even voluntary work when you apply for this scholarship because it counts.
The Area Director, Mrs. Wilda Martinez, since retired, started the program in March 2001 and since its inception the Area has provided scholarships for 6 students of which 5 our females and 5 our minorities. We look forward to our continued success with the program as we add another student to our program this summer.
