EMS Cycle

Executive Order 13148 "Greening the Government" was signed on April 21, 2000, this became known as the Environmental Management System (EMS).

An EMS is a systematic approach to ensure that environmental activities are well managed. Environmentally responsible management does not end with traditional programs that manage waste and ensure chemical, biological, or radiation safety. Think of EMS as a value-added component to these existing environmental programs.

You are responsible for performing your job in an environmentally safe and sound manner by:

  • Knowing how your job impacts the environment
  • Adhering to Standard Operation Procedures (SOPS), and
  • Knowing the potential environmental impacts of departing from these Standard Operating Procedures.
