To prevent violence in the workplace, it is necessary to anticipate problems, to catch them before the erupt into violence. This means you must remain vigilant and pay close attention to warning signs that there might be a problem brewing involving some form of violence.

 


 Examples of Warning Signs

  • Fascination with weapons. Not just simple ownership of them, but an obsession with guns, knives, and other weapons.

  • Alcohol or drug abuse. Whether these condidtions indicate violence or not, they are clearly problems that must be dealt with right away.

  • Severe Stress. Employees who for any reason are experiencing extreme stress in their lives may also have the potential for violent behavior as a way to trying to deal with the pressure they face. Remember that the stress may have nothing to do with work, it can involve problems at home, with finances, or in relationsips.

  • Anguish over employment demotion or termination.

  • History of violent incidents. Someone who resorted to violence once may do so again given the right circumstances.
