as the

ROBERT W. HOLLEY
CENTER FOR
AGRICULTURE AND HEALTH

May 12, 2008 - 2:00 pm
James Law Auditorium
College of Veterinary Medicine
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York

Working for the USDA-ARS, from 1958 to 1964, Robert W. Holley led a team to first isolate then determine the structure of the alanine transfer RNA (tRNA). This was the first nucleic acid ever sequenced, completed at the end of 1964, and was a key discovery in explaining the synthesis of proteins from messenger RNA. It was for this work that Holley was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1968.

In honor and recognition of his work with the USDA-ARS, on May 12, 2008, the U.S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Laboratory, in Ithaca, New York, where Holley first sequenced the alanine tRNA, will be renamed and rededicated as the "Robert W. Holley Center For Agriculture And Health."

A detailed schedule and further information about the dedication event can be found here.
