Questions & Answers with Dr. Tara McHugh, Food Technologist and Director of the ARS Western Regional Research Center
Q. Are there alternatives to landfill for non-edible food waste for those living in apartments which makes composting difficult?
A. Good question. I wonder if your apartment complex would be interested in setting up a compost bin for your community. In some town’s community composting is also an option.
Q. You defined the food loss as the loss during production and food waste as the loss at home by consumers. But there is significant loss during storage and distribution and marketing. How those losses are categorized?
A. Correct. Food loss includes materials not utilized during storage and distribution as well as during production and manufacturing.
