Germinating seeds of a native California wildflower

Above are germinating seeds of Clarkia elegans that were included in an experiment on longevity of seeds from native California species. The seeds have been in storage in vacuum tubes since 1948 at the ARS National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation. Photographed in 2016, they provide "proof of concept" that seed viability can be maintained for decades in gene banks.
