A DNA extract is loaded into a sequencer

A sample of DNA extract is loaded into a sequencing flow cell. The device is an example of a "next generation" of mobile, long read sequencing technologies. The sequencer is used to evaluate genetic diversity in samples preserved at the ARS National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation. RNA analysis using this same device is also being studied as a way of estimating seed aging.
