The National Agricultural Library’s parasite collection records also include notable photos like this one from 1893 of USDA’s Charles W. Stiles, who discovered American hookworm in humans, establishing that the parasite was endemic and a major health hazard in the South. Up to then, southerners had been tainted with charges of “shiftlessness” and “laziness,” but Stiles’s discovery showed much of their poor health and physical appearance could be traced to hookworm.
