At the OPE3 (Optimizing Production Inputs and Environmental Enhancement) study area in Beltsville, Maryland, hydrologist Bill Kustas checks the position of a water vapor/CO2 sensor on a micrometeorological tower. In combination with the adjacent sonic anemometer, which measures horizontal and vertical wind, these instruments measure the turbulent exchange of water, energy, and CO2 between the soil-plant system and the lower atmosphere and are used to evaluate the ALEXI computer model over different landscapes.
