Caption for January 2006 Agricultural Research magazine article, "Using HOOF-Prints To Track Brucellosis Outbreaks." Brucellosis is a disease that induces abortions in many animals, including elk (shown here), sheep, goats, cattle, pigs, and bison. A new DNA fingerprinting technique called HOOF-Prints can identify strains of Brucella bacteria, the cause of the disease.

Caption for February 2000 Agricultural Research magazine article, "Zoonoses!" Bison and elk are the remaining reservoirs of brucellosis in the United States. RB51, the new vaccine that protects bison from the disease, will be evaluated for protection of elk (shown above).
