John L. Etchells (on the left) led the ARS food science laboratory in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1937 until 1975. He developed the first commercial pasteurization process for shelf-stable pickles, among many other contributions to pickle safety. Etchells is shown here conferring with Tom Bell, research leader of the lab from 1975 to 1977.
