EBCL Quarantine

Quarantine Officer :  Gaylord Desurmont

The European Biological Control Laboratory (EBCL) conducts research on the discovery and evaluation of prospective biological control agents of invasive weeds and arthropod pests.  In order to comply with French and the European Economic Community phytosanitary regulations, the EBCL laboratory maintains two quarantine facilities at the laboratory in Montferrier-sur-Lez, France in cooperation with the Service régional de l’alimentation (SRAL) Occitanie and the Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l'alimentation, de l'environnement et du travail (ANSES).  The first five-year agreement to operate the two quarantines was signed by the French authorities in October 1999.  Since then, the agreement has been renewed every five years.

Live materials being imported in and exported from the quarantines are subjected to importation and exportation permits from the countries and regions involved.

The quarantine laboratories are under the responsibility of the Laboratory Director and the Quarantine Officer.  They control access to the quarantines, liaison between scientific research teams working in quarantine, define protocols and procedures, assign space, and supervise the procedures.
