Dr. Shaun Bushman presented current research regarding seed production and management of two native Great Basin legumes: western prairie clover and basalt milkvetch. Approximately 35 participants attended representing public and private land managers as well as native forb seed producers.

September 14-17, 2010 - Area-Wide Field School (Boise, Idaho) - The EBIPM Field School offers a unique educational opportunity for land and resource managers dealing with invasive plants. While you'll spend some time in the traditional classroom setting, most of the EBIPM field school will be in the field seeing the study sites and learning by doing. You'll see how ecological principles and strategies can be used to stop treating symptoms and to start repairing the underlying problems that actually cause the invasion. Two FRRL Scientists, Tom Monaco and Tom Jones, will be teaching principles of plant material selection and their use to discourage invasive weed dominance on rangelands.

May 18-20, 2010 - 16th Wildland Shrub Symposium (Logan, Utah) - The USDA Agricultural Research Service, Forage and Range Research Laboratory is a member of the Shrubland Research Consortium, which was formed in 1983 and now has 27 institutional members. In May 2010, the FRRL took a lead role in organizing the 16th Biannual Wildland Shrub Symposium held in Logan, Utah. The proceedings of this symposium contains 29 papers centered on the theme of threats to shrubland ecosystem integrity. Papers address the contemporary issues of energy development and reclamation impacts on ecosystem function, invasive plant ecology, wildlife habitats, restoration opportunities, historical perspectives in shrublands, ecosystem threats due to fire in the Mojave Desert, and modeling and monitoring of shrubland ecosystems. An overarching goal of the symposium was to make linkages between research and management. Papers can be accessed and downloaded from the following external site: USU Digital Commons.

March 2010 - Symposium on Molecular Breeding of Forage & Turf, Buenos Aires, Argentina - The objective of this symposium was to deliberate on topics related with molecular breeding technologies of forage and turf, with emphasis on estimation of genetic diversity, gene discovery, genetic mapping, molecular assisted selection, transgenics and risk evaluation, and comparative genomics and bioinformatics.
February 2010 - Society for Range Management Annual Meeting - Plant improvement has historically played an essential role in the enhancement of rangeland ecosystems. Novel native and genetically manipulated plants have been used successfully for rangeland repair in a diverse array of disturbed ecosystems. Concepts, methods, and issues underlying plant improvement with regards to rangelands are not common knowledge among SRM members. This lack of understanding has led to misconceptions regarding the use of improved plant materials for repair of rangeland ecosystems. This symposium seeks to provide society members with information regarding plant materials development in the backdrop of the repair of rangeland ecosystems in changing environments.
