cp - Curved Pod (Concavum)

The cp mutation causes the pod to curve concavely quite sharply. This gene was first reported in 1917, by White, as a spontaneously occurring mutation. The effect of cp depends upon other characteristics of the pod, where short, broad pods are less concave than long, narrow ones. This effect is shown somewhat in the photo above. What this photo also shows is that the cp trait is evident in both green and dry pods.

There are two loci that are reported to condition the cp trait, cp-1 and cp-2. The map location for cp-1 is near the middle of linkage group V, while cp-2 is not yet mapped. Dr. Marx may not have known which locus carried the gene in his collection, as no record of this distinction has been found among his papers. Eight accessions in this collection are scored for the cp trait. If you would like to query for the cp trait, click here.
