dp - Dark Pods
The dark pod trait in peas (dp) was first reported by Dr. Marx in 1970 in Pisum Newsletter V 2. He found it as a spontaneous occurance in the variety 'Miragreen'. Pods from plants that are homozygous for this recessively inherited trait have pods that are darker than normal pods, and have a blue-green color reminiscent to that of the foliage of plants expressing the cov gene. This color difference is likely due to a change in the quantity or quality of chlorophyll, most likely the ration of chlorophyll a to b.
The dp gene maps to linkage group 3. There are eight accessions in this collection that carry the dp mutation, and a ninth one that might. If you would like to query for the dp gene, click here.
