Biography and Research
Dr. Steven (Steve) Peterson has been a Research Chemist at NCAUR, USDA-ARS, Peoria, IL since 2002. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Illinois State University and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Peterson is a member of a team of scientists conducting research on using biochar as filler material for rubber composites (replacing carbon black, a byproduct of fossil fuels). Biochar is a renewable form of carbon that can be produced from any carbon-containing biomass by treating biomass with high temperature while excluding oxygen (pyrolysis). Dr. Peterson’s research also focuses on taking advantage of the naturally porous structure of biochar to use it in sorptive media applications in water purification and to ‘charge’ it with organic components to replace peat moss as a horticultural amendment. In Dr. Peterson’s research, he evaluates and characterizes feedstocks for biochar production and modifies the surface chemistry of biochar.
