Angie Burgos is a biologist and ORISE participant who joined FDWSRU in April 2024. She works in Dr. Alina Puig’s laboratory, supporting her group research that works with Peronosclerospora spp. causing downy mildew diseases in sorghum, corn, and sugarcane. She is currently working with Peronosclerospora sorghi transmitted under controlled conditions and evaluating emerging viruses on food crops.

Other skills include uses of molecular techniques to identify pathogens, plant/fungal host maintenance, propagation and micropropagation of plants.

Previously, she worked as a biological science technician at USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) supporting the Plant Germplasm Quarantine Program (PGQP) identifying pathogens in cassava, potato and sweet potato crops by mechanical transmissions, serology, PCR, bioassays and leaf dip assay by electron microscopy.
