Biography
Dr. Meagher has been conducting research dealing with integrated pest management, ecology, and behavior since obtaining his Ph.D. in 1985. He joined ARS in 1996. Over his career, he has authored or co-authored over 170 peer-reviewed publications, 4 book chapters, 47 technical or popular publications, 72 invited presentations and 159 regular presentations to audiences ranging from grower groups to scientists at national meetings, and scientists and government officials at international symposia. His papers represent research conducted in insect behavior, biological control, sampling and monitoring, and host plant resistance in cropping systems from stored products, tree and small fruits, vegetables, and field crops. His most recent research has centered on designing the ecological foundation for area-wide and biological control of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). He has collaborated closely with Dr. Rod Nagoshi, a research geneticist in the unit, to determine the population structure of overwintering moths in Florida to specify which subsets are migratory and the founders of infestations as far north as the Canadian border.
