Dr. Mike Jackson is a research chemist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Peoria, IL. Dr. Jackson received his BS in chemistry from Central Michigan University in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1988. Following a Research Associate position at the University of Virginia studying bacterial metalloenzymes, he joined ARS at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research working of microbial conversion of organic compounds. His research now centers on the catalytic conversion of specialty crops and crop residues to marketable products. This interest has led to a biobased insect repellent from the oilseed crop Cuphea, a flavoring compound from xylose, and a novel chemical from corn cobs. His work has also expanded into the characterization of biochar for horticultural and technical uses.
