Research Leader
Matt is a Research Ecologist with the Water Quality and Ecology Research Unit (WQERU), part of the USDA-ARS National Sedimentation Laboratory (NSL) located in Oxford, Mississippi. He is the Lead Scientist for the Unit’s CRIS Project, “Strategic Investigations to Improve Water Quality and Ecosystem Sustainability in Agricultural Landscapes.” Matt’s research focuses on using aquatic vegetation to mitigate pesticides and nutrients in agricultural runoff.
Raised on a rice farm in northeast Arkansas, Matt learned the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship early on. He spent his summers on the farm either on a tractor or scouting rice fields for disease.
Matt received his BS and MS degrees in biology, with an emphasis on environmental toxicology, from Arkansas State University. He earned his PhD in biology from the University of Mississippi in 1999 where he examined the ability of constructed wetlands to mitigate pesticides. Matt works with a diverse group of scientists examining the chemical, microbiological, and physical processes involved in contaminant transfer and transformation within the soil and water environment, as well as designing innovative management practices to mitigate impacts of agricultural runoff.
