Kale Harbick's research includes engineering applications in controlled environment agriculture (CEA) such as environmental control systems, and modeling of energy and light. His program is directed by ARS National Program 305-Crop Production. Kale is located at the Toledo, Ohio worksite of the Application Technology Research Unit (ATRU) in Wooster, Ohio. Kale collaborates with a national team of scientists via ARS funding and extramural grants. He serves as an advisory board member of local stakeholder groups such as the Agricultural Incubator Foundation (AIF). His research is national in scope and is focused on optimizing certain criteria of CEA production such as minimizing energy, improving light uniformity, and maximizing yield.
Current projects include:
* Energy modeling of greenhouses and other CEA facilities
* Improving light and CO2 control systems in greenhouses
* Near-field radiometry of horticultural luminaires
* Modeling of greenhouse natural light
